Our Story

The Austin Fairchild Art Foundation was founded in 1984 for the purpose of fostering the production, promotion, understanding and appreciation of art.

From the start, the Foundation focused on placing art in public venues. We did this by helping donors with the often difficult task of placing their art in museums and other appropriate non-profit institutions. Visit Art Donor Program for a full explanation of our services and a list of museums, universities and other non-profits which have received donations through AFAF.

Our focus expanded to include supporting artists directly, and in 1986 we sponsored the international donation of a print series entitled Prophecy of Peace by Texas artist Geoffrey Graham and a related glass sculpture by Dallas artist Polly Gessell. The project brought together the cities of Dallas and Austin, Texas, and Adelaide, Australia, and it marked our first effort to inspire communities toward peace by using art as a visual cue.

Another project, Australian Images, sponsored San Diego artist Paul Maxwell on a trip to Australia to immerse himself in the culture and produce a visual response to that experience. The result was the production of a traveling exhibit of Paul's paintings and sculptures, which toured in Australia and America.

In 2001 we launched the Thanksgiving Image Project, which seeks to encourage the expression of gratitude by providing a visual cue to the universal concept of thanksgiving. Through this project we contribute inspiring and beautiful art prints and cards to non-profit service organizations such as Meals on Wheels, SafePlace and Habitat for Humanity.

Through our Windows on Congress program, The Foundation donated display space for local non-profit organizations in the windows and antique lobby display cases of the historic Scarbrough Building in downtown Austin, Texas. From 2001 through 2006 this project provided a community showcase for the Austin Museum of Art, Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin Children's Museum, Long Center for the Performing Arts, Austin History Center, Heritage Society of Austin, Pioneer Farm and Capital City Scribes.
